This could be the first time I’ve ever actually posted a travel tip for my home country! Shameful. Anyway, I can highly recommend the George & Dragon pub in Burpham, Sussex, for a hearty lunch in the middle of a country hike. I was there on a blissful sunny day with a remarkably clear blue sky. We sat outside and ate a trendy ploughman’s from a wooden board: a generous hunk of cheddar; hearty bread; homemade picallili in sweet glass jars, spiked with sweet pickled onions and crunchy cauliflower. If you’re in the area, go. We were halfway through a walk from Arundel to Amberley, a varied trek that I’d also recommend, taking in chalk escarpments, woodlands and open fields flecked with poppies and sheep.
